Sacred and Forbidden

I just realized today it’s been a whole year since I posted in this blog.  I am sure you can guess what is mainly to blame.  Yes, what with exhibitions and tours canceled, and inspiration flailing for a while, there hasn’t been a lot of activity to report.  I created a few fractals early last spring, and was going to post about them right before they were supposed to be shown in April…

I’ve been keeping myself very busy in the meantime, never fear.   Just not blogging!

This would have been Welcome Back to Otterville weekend in a normal year.  I thought today would be a good time to let you all know I am still here, I do have art available, (see my home page), and if you wish to purchase any (for that extra special gift or any other reason), it can indeed be arranged.  Just use the contact page on this website.

Welcome Back to Otterville this weekend

One of my favourite things about opening my gallery for studio tours is the interaction with people who are seeing my fractal art for the first time.  It’s definitely not the same as viewing it online, partly because of the image resolution and detail and size, and partly because of the metal and acrylic surfaces I usually print on.  And for the paintings, the size and the detail provide even more of a difference from what you’ll see here on my website.

But the best part is introducing some to the entire concept of fractals.  If you missed the fun of reading my blog from the very start, back in 2014, and you don’t have a way to come this weekend to see them, I am linking you back to that first post here.

I would love for you to come and visit my gallery this weekend so I can share with you the joy and wonder I feel about creating vivid reflections of nature with both paint and with mathematics.

November Shows

Today I will be setting up at South Gate Centre in Woodstock in preparation for this weekend’s Oxford Creates Art Expo, organized by Oxford Creative Connections, Inc.  I will have several of my newest watercolour paintings available there, as well as a sampling of my fractal pieces.  There will be many other artists, as well as authors, exhibiting at this show.

In two weeks, I will be opening my own gallery/studio doors to welcome the public for our 23rd annual studio tour here in Otterville:  Welcome Back to Otterville.  This will feature a much larger selection of my own work.  We have a very good variety of stops this year with several new artisans!  I will post again soon with more details about that.

New Artisan Boutique in Clinton, Ontario

Last week I made the drive to Clinton, Ontario to drop off some of my art, and work a shift at a new store there called ‘Mama & Me, the Canadian Artisan Gift Boutique’.  The business owner, Crystal, was the Grand Prize Winner of Central Huron’s Win This Space Contest, and has worked very hard to transform her vision into a reality.  As she put it, only 16 gallons of paint and 400+ hours of labour later… her shop was ready to open!  It’s full of handmade items displayed in unique ways mostly on re-purposed furniture, which gives it a nice, welcoming, homey feel.  The address is 17 Victoria St., Clinton, ON, and it’s not far from Bayfield, Goderich, and Blyth.  Open from 11 am-5 pm Tuesday to Friday, 10 am to 5? pm Saturday (not sure) and closed Sundays and Mondays.

Time for Tea

Every once in a while I discover and develop an image that is just uncannily familiar.  From the similarity of “Pollinator” to an actual pollinator, to the “Ocean Floor” that isn’t actually an ocean floor, we see how nature follows the patterns dictated by the geometry we know as fractals.   However, it is not strictly ‘natural’ things which follow fractal patterns.  We can see fractal patterns in things like architecture, art, music, and… fancy china dishes!

I absolutely love this image which I’ve entitled ‘Time for Tea”.  To me it seems vaguely reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and the interior of my Mom’s china cabinet.  I recently printed it on metal.  Here is what the digital image I created looks like.  In the metal print, the white parts are silver, so it does change the look of it a little.  It would be perfect in a super modern dining room, I think.

To see the 24×32″ metal print, you’ll have to come out to my gallery, as it is just very difficult to photograph the reflective surface.  Lucky for you, the perfect opportunity to do that is right around the corner, during the Oxford Studio Tour, May 4 & 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.!

New Fractals

I’m excited to have some new fractal art to show you in a week at the Oxford Studio Tour.

We have thirty-one artists at seventeen locations throughout Oxford County, Ontario, Canada in the heart of the southwestern part of this province.  It will be a fun day trip for anyone in the region – even those coming out from Toronto! (Wouldn’t it be nice to get out of the city for a day or two?)

Here is a preview of one of the fractals.  I have printed it (using Posterjack) on metal, 20×20″ and that is the only print I will do, so it is an original piece.  It is created digitally using the Mandelbulb 3D software.  As I find usual and striking for fractals, it looks very natural. It is pretty obvious what I thought it resembled!  I hope you’ll come and see it.  I think it would make a great piece to gaze at from anywhere in your house, while you consider nature and its mysteries, and it draws you in close, as well – as all fractals do with their self-similarity on smaller and smaller scales.

Oxford Studio Tour coming up!

It’s April, and that means it is almost time for our annual Oxford Studio Tour here in Oxford County, Ontario.  My studio has been one of the locations for this tour since its inception nine years ago (I also look after the website and some other stuff!).  I will have plenty of work here for visitors to see.   If you’ve never been out on the tour, it is a great way to celebrate spring, which I am hoping is right around the corner… here is a view out my front window yesterday:

So yeah, we’re not quite there yet.  But the daffodils in my back yard are really trying to bloom.  The ones out front are a little slower but they are hopeful.  Here is a painting I did of the ones out front a few years ago – it’s still available, along with several other watercolours in a variety of styles:

One of the newer fractals that I showed at our recent Artists of Oxford show at Ingersoll Creative Arts Centre, is Diaphanous.  It will be here for the studio tour, along with some other new pieces.  I will even have a couple of Artifact scarves available for purchase.

I hope if you live in the region, you’ll grab a friend or three, hop in the car, and make a day of it.  There is a ton of talent to see on this tour, as well as a lot of lovely countryside, and I especially hope you’ll make it out to my location, #6, at the south end of the county.  Here is a google map of the whole tour.

Keep an eye out for our red posters advertising the tour around the region, and our printed brochures designed by artist and graphic designer Rhonda Franks (she’s at location #7 along with Sue Goossens, who is the founder for the tour).  The brochures include descriptions and maps to help guide you around the tour.  If you’d like me to mail you a brochure, please contact me!

Oxford Studio Tour this coming weekend

It seems that the first weekend of May has crept up on me and while I’ve been posting about the Oxford Studio Tour on my Facebook page and my Twitter account (@artnaturali), and on my other website, I neglected to do so here!  It’s this coming weekend already and I hope you haven’t made other plans yet.

I will be in my gallery/studio which is Stop #7 on the tour, to welcome you all this weekend. Visitors will be flocking to Oxford County, Ontario to view, enjoy, and purchase art.  I have an abundance to show.  Many of my fractal paintings, photos, and original single edition prints will be here, and many of my original paintings of other subjects.  These include watercolour paintings on traditional paper, on gesso-coated paper, and on yupo.  I will have two brand new fractal metal prints on display, as well as a new piece printed on acrylic!  In addition to this, there will be some new fractal photos, and some new non-fractal pieces in watercolour.  Brochures for the tour are available at a number of locations – including here at my studio!  To get you started, here is a map to my location.  I’m about an hour from Hamilton/Burlington, an hour from London, or an hour from Kitchener/Waterloo.

The Station Arts Centre has turned out to be a great location for my original series of fractal art.  Their new lighting system really shows off the metal prints well, and the one wall was the perfect length to show off the larger paintings all together.  Much better than crowding them into my home gallery, that’s for sure!

Show Reprisal!!

I haven’t written in a little while but I now have some great news for followers in the area who haven’t had a chance to see my fractals in person yet.  I am showing those that are left (31 pieces) at the Station Arts Centre in Tillsonburg for the month of March.  The show opens March 6 (this Friday) at 7-9 pm.  It runs until April 7.  The show is called, this time, A Fractal Universe.  Come land in it!
